Battery marking, labelling and identification suppliers in Europe

The 28 suppliers here put an identifier onto the battery itself. Two trades sit inside one category. Direct part marking writes a code into the cell can, the busbar or the housing using a laser or a dot peen head. Label making prints the same code onto material chosen to survive heat, solvent and cleaning.

What to check before you shortlist

The labelling and QR code rules live in Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. They sit on the battery. Where the battery is too small to carry them, they move to the packaging and the accompanying documents. That distinction decides which supplier you need. A cell with no readable surface is a print job on the box rather than a laser cell on the line.

Ask what the mark has to survive, then ask for the evidence behind the answer. A label on a pack lives with electrolyte, cleaning agents, high temperature and years of vibration. Companies in this category state resistance properties on their data sheets. A named temperature range with a list of chemicals is worth more than any durability adjective.

A code that is present is not the same as a code that reads. Verification equipment grades a printed or marked symbol against ISO/IEC 15415. Several companies listed here build nothing else, which tells you what the common failure is: a code that scans on the line in week one and fails at the recycler in year twelve.

The last question is where the marking happens. An inline head has to hold cycle time on a running line, so integration and read-back matter more than headline marking speed. Offline stations are cheaper and slower. A supplier quoting a marking rate without asking about your material, your station time and your read distance has not understood the job.

Questions buyers ask before they shortlist

Laser marking or a printed label: which one do we need?

It depends on what the code has to outlive. A mark burned into a can or a housing cannot fall off and survives washing, but it needs a metal surface and time at a station. A label carries more information in less space and can go on late in assembly, which makes the adhesive the weakest link in your traceability. Packs frequently use both.

How do we know the code will still scan in ten years?

You measure it rather than trust it. Ask for the grade the supplier's process reaches against ISO/IEC 15415 and for the ageing tests behind any durability claim. Grade is a number produced by equipment, not a promise in a brochure. Where a battery outlives its label, the code on the packaging and in the documents is what survives, which is one reason Article 13 names all three places.

Can a marking supplier produce our passport data as well?

Usually not. These companies make and check the carrier: the mark, the label, the reader. The data behind the code comes from passport software or from your own systems. The normal arrangement is two suppliers with a written handover covering who mints the identifier, who applies it and who proves it reads.

What do we send to get a comparable quote?

The substrate, the cycle time and the read conditions. Name the material and finish the code goes onto, the seconds available at that station, plus the distance and angle a reader will work from. Add the smallest cell in the family and the grade you need to hit. Quotes returned against that brief can be compared. Quotes returned against a photograph cannot.
