What to check before you shortlist
Read the evidence level before you read anything else. Most entries here carry an ESTIMATE marking rather than a VERIFIED one, because much of European upstream supply is announced capacity rather than shipped tonnes. VERIFIED means the source is named and you can go and check it. Where a company has changed hands or been folded into a larger group, the entry says so. A corporate name on a term sheet can already be out of date.
One commercial question decides everything else. Ask what is already committed under offtake agreements. Early European lithium and nickel output is frequently sold years before a plant runs, so available tonnage matters far more than nameplate tonnage.
Then get precise about the chemical form. Battery-grade lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate are not the same purchase and nickel sulphate is a different product from nickel metal. Ask for the impurity specification with limits stated per element, a certificate of analysis per lot and the sampling method behind it. Ask which independent laboratory assays the material. In this tier the assay is the contract and a dispute over grade is expensive to unwind after shipment.
Due diligence lands hardest at this level. Obligations covering lithium and nickel, together with cobalt and natural graphite, take effect on 18 August 2027 after a two-year postponement under Regulation (EU) 2025/1561. Whoever places a battery on the EU market will need records that begin here, so ask what chain-of-custody evidence a producer issues today rather than what it plans to build.
Questions buyers ask before they shortlist
Where does Europe get its lithium?
Very little of it domestically at present, which is why this part of the directory is mostly projects. European lithium work runs through hard-rock spodumene in Portugal, geothermal brine in the Upper Rhine valley and refining capacity being built in Germany and Finland. Ask any developer for its current stage, its permit status and its first production date, then check that date against the last announcement.
What is the difference between a lithium mine and a lithium converter?
A mine produces concentrate, usually spodumene, while a converter turns that concentrate into battery-grade lithium hydroxide or carbonate. They are separate businesses with separate economics. Several European players hold only one of the two. Ask which step a company performs on its own site, where the feedstock comes from and who owns the offtake at each hand-off.
How do I verify a battery raw materials project is real?
Read the permit, not the press release. A genuine project has an environmental authorisation with a reference number, a defined site and a construction timetable you can date. Records here link to the source they were built from and show when it was last checked, which gives you a starting point rather than a conclusion. Verify anything load-bearing at the competent authority yourself.
Which raw materials go into a lithium-ion battery?
Cathodes use lithium together with nickel, cobalt or manganese in the common chemistries. LFP replaces those metals with iron and phosphate. Anodes are mostly graphite, with silicon added in newer designs and copper and aluminium foils carry the current. The EU due diligence obligations name four inputs: lithium, nickel, cobalt plus natural graphite.
