What to check before you shortlist
Accreditation is not a single badge. ISO 17025 is granted against a scope document naming each standard and each test method a laboratory may perform, so a site can be accredited for one standard on your list and not for the next. Ask for the scope document itself and read the standard numbers in it. Then ask whether what you receive will be an accredited report or an engineering report, because a customer or an authority will sometimes accept only the first.
One distinction saves weeks. A test laboratory produces data. A National Certification Body under the CB scheme issues the certificate that other markets recognise. Work out which one you need before you book a slot.
Match the standard to the product rather than to the brochure. IEC 62133-2 is the portable route. IEC 62619 is the industrial and storage route. UN 38.3 is the transport gate over both and it caps state of charge at 30% for lithium-ion moving by air. Dangerous goods packaging is a separate discipline again, with its own approvals, so a site that tests cells does not automatically test the box the cells travel in.
Before the schedule is fixed, ask for a redacted sample report, the current queue in business days and what happens when a sample fails. A failure on first submission is normal. The labs worth booking answer it with a diagnosis and a retest slot. The rest send an invoice. Ask too about witness testing at your own site.

What is ISO 17025 accreditation and why does it matter?
ISO 17025 sets the requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories and it is always granted against a defined scope rather than across the board. That scope is the part that matters to you. Ask for the document, find your standard in it and check the issue date. A site working outside its scope can still run the test, but the report may not be accepted where you need it.
How much does UN 38.3 testing cost and how long does it take?
No public price list is reliable, because both figures depend on the number of cell or pack variants, the test sequence required and the queue at the laboratory. Ask for a quotation against your exact bill of materials and a slot date in business days. Ask what a retest costs after a design change, since that second number is usually where a budget breaks.
Which battery standards does a testing lab need to cover?
Cover UN 38.3 first, because it is the gate for every transport mode. Add IEC 62133-2 if the product is a portable sealed cell or battery or IEC 62619 if it is industrial or storage duty. Road vehicle work pulls in ECE R100, while grid-scale storage buyers often ask for UL 9540A fire propagation evidence. Match the list to your market, not to the longest brochure.
Can one laboratory certify a battery for the whole of Europe?
A single site can often produce every test report you need, but testing and market acceptance are separate steps. Under the CB scheme a National Certification Body issues a certificate that other member bodies recognise, which is what shortens a multi-market launch. Ask whether the site you are booking holds that status itself or passes the work on and ask which of your target markets it has already served.
