What to check before you shortlist

State of health (SOH) is the number the whole trade turns on and it is measured in more than one way. Ask how it was derived: a capacity test at a stated C-rate, an internal resistance measurement or an estimate read off the vehicle's own controller. Ask at what level the grading was done, since a pack graded as a whole hides a weak module inside it. Then ask for the raw test data per module rather than one headline percentage.
Provenance is the second question. Where did the packs come from, what were they doing before and can the seller show a chain of custody back to the vehicle? Warranty terms reveal what a seller actually believes. Ask for the guaranteed remaining capacity, the term in years or cycles and what happens when a module fails inside it. Ask who takes the battery back at true end of life. Get that answer in writing.
Two compliance points catch buyers out. UN 38.3 applies before lithium cells or batteries ship by any mode and a used pack does not inherit a test summary written for a new one, so ask what covers the units you are buying. Then ask who counts as the producer once a battery is repurposed and placed on the market again. Ask who will issue its passport, with the 18 February 2027 date for industrial batteries over 2 kWh in mind.
Questions buyers ask before they shortlist
How long does a second-life battery last?
Nobody can answer that from a datasheet, because remaining life depends on the pack's first-life duty cycle, its measured state of health (SOH) and how hard the second application works it. Ask for the cycle count and the capacity test behind the seller's estimate. A warranty expressed as guaranteed capacity after a stated number of years is worth far more than a projected lifetime.
Are second-life batteries cheaper than new ones?
Usually, though the gap narrows once testing, grading, a new battery management system and integration are counted in. Compare on installed cost per usable kWh over the guaranteed term rather than on the price of a module. Then compare the warranties side by side. A cheap module with a short guarantee can cost more per year than a new cell with a long one.
What should I ask a second-life battery supplier for?
Ask for the grading report at module level, the provenance of the packs and the transport classification for the units as they will ship. Add the warranty terms and the end-of-life route. Those five items separate a repurposer with a process from a dealer with a pallet and they take one email to request.
