What to check before you shortlist
The trap in this category is assuming the cell paperwork covers your pack. It does not. UN 38.3 applies to the battery you actually ship, so a new pack design, a different cell source or a change in configuration can put you back in front of a test lab. State of charge must not exceed 30% for air shipment of lithium-ion, which shapes how a finished pack leaves the building. Ask who owns the test report, who pays for a retest after an engineering change and how long the queue runs.
For automotive and heavy-vehicle programmes the quality system is the gate. IATF 16949 sits on top of ISO 9001:2015 and brings APQP with it. PPAP falls due whenever a new part enters production, a design changes, tooling is replaced, a material source moves or production shifts to another site. Ask at what submission level the file arrives, who signs it and what first article inspection covers. A maker that hesitates here will hesitate again during a launch.
Commercial terms shorten a shortlist faster than specifications do. Ask for the minimum order quantity, the lead time counted in working days from order confirmation, the non-recurring engineering charge and who owns the tooling at the end of the programme.
Two questions close the gap between a good supplier and a safe one. Is the design second-source ready, meaning the pack can be built with a second cell without full requalification? And who owns the BMS firmware, the calibration and the right to change them? A pack nobody else can rebuild is a line-down risk wearing a purchase order.
Questions buyers ask before they shortlist
What certifications should a battery pack supplier have?
ISO 9001:2015 is the floor and automotive or heavy-vehicle work needs IATF 16949 above it. Ask for the transport test summary on the finished pack, plus IEC 62133-2 or IEC 62619 depending on whether the pack is portable or industrial. Request the certificate with its scope and validity date, then check that the scope names pack assembly at the site you are buying from rather than a sister plant.
What is a typical lead time for a custom battery pack?
No honest maker quotes a typical figure, because pack lead time is mostly cell lead time plus your own approval loops. Ask for it in business days from purchase order confirmation instead of in weeks and ask separately for the prototype, tooling and repeat-order figures. An answer of roughly four weeks is not something you can plan a launch against.
Can a battery pack manufacturer supply the BMS as well?
Yes in many cases and this directory includes builders that design their own battery management system (BMS) in house alongside others that fit a bought-in board. Both routes work. What matters is who can change the firmware when your application changes, who holds the source code and what happens to support if the relationship ends. Settle it before the prototype.
What disqualifies a battery pack supplier?
Refusing to hand over documentation is the clearest disqualifier, followed by vague answers on delivery dates and any unresolved gap against your technical specification. If a maker will not name its cell source, will not commit to a date in business days or cannot show a test report for a comparable pack, stop there. Those refusals predict launch problems better than any factory tour.
