Battery recycling companies in Europe

Of the 28 battery recycling companies listed here, not all of them do the same job. The label covers at least four different tasks. A collector moves waste batteries. A pre-treatment plant shreds them into black mass. Black mass then goes to a refinery that converts it into battery-grade salts. Lead-acid smelting is a separate business again, with its own permits and its own economics.

What to check before you shortlist

So the first question is which of those steps happen on the company's own site and where the material travels next. Several operators here shred and sell black mass onward to a refinery in another country. Others run hydrometallurgy themselves and sell recovered lithium salts directly. Neither model is better than the other. They give you different answers when a customer or an auditor asks what became of your scrap, so establish the chain before you sign anything.

Put one date in the supplier file. From August 2028 recycled content has to be declared. The numbers you declare will be a recycler's numbers. Ask now what it records per batch.

Waste paperwork is the real deliverable for a buyer. Ask which permits the site holds in its own name and which parts it subcontracts, what documentation arrives per consignment and how long records are kept. Transport is the other constraint. Used lithium batteries move under dangerous goods rules and a damaged or defective pack is a stricter case again, so ask who classifies the load and who arranges compliant packaging.

Geography follows the plants. Germany carries the most entries in this category, with clusters in France, Poland, Finland, Hungary and Romania. Lead-acid recyclers are spread far wider than lithium ones. Each entry links to the source it came from and shows a checked date, which tells you the record was read rather than guessed. It does not tell you a site is permitted for your waste stream today. Only the permit does.

Questions buyers ask before they shortlist

What happens to a battery when it is recycled?

A pack is discharged and dismantled, then shredded into black mass, which is refined back into metal salts a cathode plant can use. Lead-acid batteries follow a different route through smelting and portable batteries are sorted by chemistry first. Ask any recycler to describe the route for your specific chemistry and format, because the generic version hides where the material actually ends up.

How do I choose a battery recycling company in Europe?

Match the site to your chemistry and your volume first, then confirm it performs the step you need rather than brokering it onward. Ask for the permit held in the site's own name, the documentation issued per consignment and the recovery figures it will put in writing. Distance matters too, since dangerous goods transport can cost more than the treatment itself.

What is black mass?

Black mass is the powder left once used lithium-ion batteries have been discharged and shredded. It holds the recoverable metals, mainly nickel with cobalt and lithium, alongside graphite. It is an intermediate rather than a finished product, so ask any pre-treatment operator where its black mass goes next and what documentation comes back to you.

Do I pay for battery recycling or do they pay me?

Both happen and the direction depends on chemistry and volume. Lead-acid scrap usually carries a positive value and is bought. Lithium-ion is more often a cost, particularly for damaged or low-nickel packs, because transport and discharge dominate the economics. Ask for a gate fee, a transport price and a value for the recovered metal as three separate lines.
