What to check before you shortlist

Ask who supplies the cells and who supplies the power conversion system, then ask which of them carries the warranty. Very few integrators make their own cells. One company here builds every part of its system in house except the LFP cells, which is unusual enough to be worth checking against anybody claiming the same. Get the bill of materials down to component maker and model, because a system warranty backed by a firm that leaves the market is a warranty you own alone.

Two numbers carry the commercial case: round-trip efficiency at the point you actually measure it and guaranteed capacity at the end of the warranty term. Ask which test method sits behind each. Ask who pays if the site misses them.

Safety evidence is the part that gets a project permitted. Ask for cell-level test reports against IEC 62619 and for large-scale fire propagation testing such as UL 9540A on the unit the fire authority will see. Ask how the enclosure detects and vents a thermal event. Ask what the local fire service has already accepted on a comparable site. An integrator that has been through permitting before will answer this in an afternoon.

Then settle who the economic operator is. Article 77 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a digital battery passport from 18 February 2027. An industrial battery over 2 kWh sold into the EU is in scope. If the integrator is the party placing the system on that market, the duty is the integrator's. Ask how it will be met. Ask what the maintenance contract covers after year two.

What does a BESS integrator actually do?

An integrator specifies and assembles a complete storage system, commissions it on site, then supports it in service. The scope covers cell selection, the power conversion system, thermal management, fire detection and the grid interface. Some also act as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. Ask which of those roles a company will sign for, because the word integrator is used loosely across this market.

How do I choose a BESS integrator?

Start from the project rather than the product. A grid-scale site, a commercial installation and a home system need different companies. The entries here split along that line. Then check delivered projects of comparable size in your market, the cell and inverter brands inside the system and who holds the performance guarantee. Ask for a reference site you can visit.

Which safety standards apply to a battery energy storage system?

IEC 62619 covers industrial and energy storage cells and batteries. It is the usual starting point for cell-level safety evidence. Large-scale fire propagation testing to UL 9540A is what many fire authorities and insurers ask to see for a containerised unit. Requirements vary by country and by planning authority, so confirm the local list before you specify, then ask for the reports rather than a summary.

Where are Europe's BESS integrators based?
