What to check before you shortlist
Work out which of the three you are buying before you compare datasheets, because the questions differ completely. From a semiconductor maker you want long-term availability and a last-time-buy policy. From a unit supplier you want cell count, voltage range, chemistry support, balancing method and the protocol on the bus, usually CAN or RS-485. From an engineering house you want a fixed scope, a rate card and a named team, since the deliverable is a design rather than a part number.
Ask who owns the firmware. Not the hardware, the firmware. Who can change a threshold two years from now, who holds the source code and what happens if the relationship ends? Answer that before the first prototype.
Functional safety is where a shortlist thins out. Ask what safety work has been done, to which standard and whether the evidence can be shared under a non-disclosure agreement rather than described in a meeting. Road vehicle work brings ECE R100 into scope. Ask how a supplier validates its state of charge algorithm across temperature and age. Ask what happens to accuracy at the ends of the range, because that is where a warranty claim gets decided.
One requirement is worth raising early. From 18 February 2027 a digital battery passport is mandatory for EV, light means of transport and industrial batteries above 2 kWh sold in the EU. The data behind it comes off the BMS. Ask whether yours can export cycle count and state of health records in a defined format. Ask who owns that data.
Questions buyers ask before they shortlist
What should I look for in a battery management system supplier?
Match the type of firm to the job first: silicon, a finished unit or a development contract. Then check cell count, voltage range and supported chemistries against your pack, followed by the protocol your vehicle or system already speaks. Ask for functional safety evidence and a long-term availability statement. Those two answers separate a product with a roadmap from a prototype with a price.
Can I use a third-party BMS with any battery pack?
Not safely without checking. A BMS is matched to the cell chemistry, the cell count, the current range and the balancing topology of a pack, so a unit that works on one design can be wrong on the next. Ask the BMS maker for a compatibility statement against your exact cell datasheet. Ask the pack builder who signs off the combination.

What does a BMS need to provide for the battery passport?

The obligation starts on 18 February 2027 and reaches industrial batteries above 2 kWh, among others. Ask a supplier what it exports today rather than what it plans to support and ask who holds the data.
